Chiropractic Treatment - Car Accidents
SHARE:

Are you experiencing back or neck pain after a car accident? There are many different treatment options available, and it can be hard to know what’s best. Let’s look at epidural steroid injections vs. chiropractic care/spinal manipulation after an accident to help you decide what might be the best treatment for you.

What Is an Epidural Steroid Injection for Back Pain?

Chiropractic Care vs Epidural Steroid Injection

An epidural steroid injection for neck pain or back pain, also known as an ESI, is the injection of steroid medication and local anesthetic into the epidural space surrounding the nerve roots and spinal cord. The goal is to reduce inflammation to help improve pain.

What Is Spinal Manipulation?

Spinal manipulation – “cracking your back” – moves the joints in your spine back into place and is often combined with exercise, massage, or physical therapy to get and keep your spine in proper alignment.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can help relieve pain that affects your muscles, bones, joints, cartilage, and connective tissue. Spinal manipulation and other forms of chiropractic care have many benefits, including:

  • Reduced neck and back pain
  • Addressing the root cause of pain
  • May help relieve some headaches
  • Non-invasive
  • Can be cheaper than conventional treatment
  • Improved posture
  • Holistic
  • Lower reliance on opioid pain relievers
  • High levels of satisfaction with treatment

Which Is Better After an Accident, Steroid Shots or Chiropractic Care/Spinal Manipulation?

While steroid shots have their place, they only address the pain itself. Epidural steroid injections don’t address the root cause of the pain, so what happens when the shot wears off? The pain returns.

Chiropractic care and spinal manipulation identifies and addresses the cause of your neck or back pain. The force of a car accident as slow as 5 mph can shift your spine out of alignment and cause issues ranging from whiplash to soft tissue injuries to a herniated disk.

Without moving your spine back into alignment and addressing the root cause of the pain, steroid shots will always be a temporary solution. Spinal manipulation has the potential – depending on your type of injury – to improve your pain rather than simply masking it.

In fact, studies have shown that spinal manipulation is at least as effective as steroid shots at relieving back and neck pain, if not more so. In one study, 76.5% of people treated with spinal manipulation experienced an improvement in their pain levels compared to 62.7% of those who received steroid injections.

Those results aren’t limited to people who haven’t received steroid injections. Another study gave patients spinal manipulation after steroid injections with impressive results. While some patients experienced complications from the steroid shots, none had complications from spinal manipulation.

One final thing to consider is the potential for complications from ESI. Possible side effects from steroid injections include:

  • Weakened bones and muscles
  • Insomnia
  • High blood sugar
  • Loss of color in the skin
  • Skin thinning
  • Moodiness
