Labor Day Weekend: The Last — and Riskiest — Stretch of Summer
Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7 this year, closing out both the summer and the stretch traffic safety researchers call the 100 Deadliest Days. It is one of the highest-risk driving weekends on the calendar in South Florida.
The combination is predictable: a three-day weekend, heavy holiday traffic on I-95 and the Turnpike, beach and event crowds, late nights, and a meaningful increase in impaired drivers on the road.
What makes the weekend risky
Impaired driving spikes. Holiday weekends consistently see more impaired drivers, especially late Saturday and Sunday nights.
Fatigue. Long drives home on Monday afternoon, after three days of activity, produce drowsy-driving crashes that look a lot like impaired-driving crashes.
Unfamiliar drivers. Out-of-town visitors navigating South Florida interchanges for the first time make abrupt lane changes and late exits.
Storm season overlap. Early September sits near the statistical peak of hurricane season. Sudden downpours are likely.
How to get through it safely
• Plan your ride home before you go out. Decide on the designated driver or the rideshare in advance, not at midnight.
• Drive defensively late at night, especially near entertainment districts and beach corridors.
• Build extra time into the Monday drive home — rushing into stop-and-go holiday traffic is how rear-end collisions happen.
• Take a break every two hours on long drives. Fatigue impairs reaction time much like alcohol does.
• Keep your following distance generous. Holiday traffic stops without warning.
