40 Years on the Same Corner

County Line Chiro

Dr. Robert Hochstein standing beside a hand-lettered County Line Chiropractic Center sign at the construction site of County Square Plaza in 1986.

There’s a photograph of a young man in a striped shirt and blue shorts standing next to a hand-lettered sign staked into a pile of limestone fill. Behind him, a building is going up — bare concrete columns, no walls yet, no parking lot. The sign next to his advertises the plaza’s future tenants to anyone driving past on 441.

The man is Dr. Robert Hochstein. The year is 1986. The sign reads County Line Chiropractic Center and gives a phone number: 654-9797.

Forty years later, that’s still our number.

A corner before it was a city

The plaza going up behind Dr. Hochstein was County Square, built in 1986 on the southeast corner of NW 2nd Avenue — State Road 7, or 441 to everyone who drives it — and County Line Road. The road is the boundary itself: cross it and you’ve left Miami-Dade for Broward.

That corner is where the name came from. Not a branding exercise. Just the road out front.

County Line Chiropractic opened as one of the first businesses in the plaza, and it opened into a neighborhood that didn’t have a city government yet. In 1986 this was unincorporated Miami-Dade County — the area most people still called Carol City. The stadium down the road hadn’t been built; Joe Robbie Stadium, now Hard Rock, opened in 1987. And the City of Miami Gardens wouldn’t be incorporated until May 2003, seventeen years after Dr. Hochstein staked that sign into the dirt.

The practice is older than the city it sits in.

What the first window said

Look closely at the storefront on opening day and you can read the strips taped inside the glass:

Auto Injury.

Se Habla Español.

That’s what we were, from the first day the doors opened. Not a general chiropractic office that gradually drifted toward accident patients — a practice that put auto injury in the window before it had its first patient, on a corner where two counties’ worth of traffic met at a light.

The Spanish came just as early. Four decades before anyone used the phrase “bilingual care access,” the sign in the window said what it needed to say to the neighborhood outside it. Today Dr. Elliot Cintron, D.C. sees Spanish-speaking patients at our Miami Gardens office — a continuation of something that was there in 1986, not a new idea.

What forty years in one specialty teaches you

There’s a real difference between a practice that sees car accident patients and a practice built around them. It shows up in the details.

Documentation. Florida’s Personal Injury Protection system runs on medical records. Four decades of writing them means knowing exactly what has to be recorded, and when, so that a patient’s care is properly documented from the first visit forward.

The 14-day window. Florida law gives you 14 days from the date of a car accident to seek initial medical care. Miss it, and your PIP benefits can be lost entirely — no matter how badly you’re hurt or how clearly the crash wasn’t your fault. We have watched patients come close to losing benefits because they waited to see whether the stiffness would go away on its own. Getting people through the door inside that window is a core part of what we do.

Delayed-onset injury. Whiplash and soft-tissue damage rarely announce themselves at the scene. Adrenaline masks a great deal. The pain that shows up three days later is the pain that matters, and recognizing it early is a skill built on volume and time.

The whole process. Insurance paperwork. Imaging when it’s needed — we have full digital X-ray at every location, and refer to trusted accredited imaging centers for MRI and CT. Coordination with an attorney if a patient has one. The adjustment is only part of what someone in the middle of an accident claim actually needs.

Drug-free, and deliberately so

Dr. Hochstein opened in a decade when the standard answer to accident pain was a prescription. County Line was built on a different premise: find the source of the injury and treat it directly. Chiropractic adjustment, physical therapy, and rehabilitation — conservative care aimed at the mechanism of the injury rather than the sensation of it.

Forty years on, that approach reads less like an alternative and more like the obvious starting point.

Still a family business

Dr. Robert Hochstein staked that sign into the dirt in 1986, and forty years later County Line Chiropractic is still his. He owns the practice and remains active in running it — he no longer treats patients, but nothing here happens without him.

The people around him are family. His oldest daughter, Dr. Laura Hochstein, D.C., serves as Chief Operating Officer. His nephew, Dr. Joseph Hochstein, D.C., is Clinic Director at our North Miami Beach office. And his son, David Hochstein, is our lead chiropractic assistant — working the floor alongside our doctors the same way his father did when the plaza was still a construction site.

Six locations now — Miami Gardens, North Miami Beach, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Lauderhill, and Oakland Park. Same focus as the sign in the dirt lot.

If you’ve been in an accident

We treat patients injured in motor vehicle collisions across Miami-Dade and Broward. We bill your PIP insurer directly. You can begin care with or without an attorney — many patients come to us first and decide about legal representation on their own timeline, which is entirely their decision to make.

Remember the 14 days. It’s the one deadline in this whole process that nobody can extend for you.

And if you’re on 441 near County Line Road, we’re the ones on the corner. Same corner. Same number.
