Car Accident Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore — and the 14-Day Deadline You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

“I feel fine.”

It is the single most common thing we hear from people who were in a car accident yesterday. And most of the time, at that moment, it is completely true. Adrenaline is a powerful painkiller, and it does not wear off on a schedule that suits you.

Here is the problem. Florida’s Personal Injury Protection (PIP) law gives you 14 days from the date of your accident to be evaluated by a qualified medical provider. Miss that window and you can lose access to benefits you have already been paying for — whether or not you were actually injured. The clock starts at the moment of impact. It does not wait for your first symptom.

Symptoms that show up late

Whiplash is the most common injury after a collision, and its symptoms typically appear 24 to 72 hours after the impact. Sometimes later. These are the ones people talk themselves out of:

Neck pain or stiffness

Lower or mid-back pain

Headaches that don’t let up

Dizziness or blurred vision

Tingling or numbness in the arms or hands

Shoulder pain, or pain between the shoulder blades

Trouble sleeping or trouble concentrating

None of these reliably show up on the day of the crash. That is exactly why the 14-day rule catches so many people — by the time the symptom arrives, the deadline is already close.

“But the ER cleared me”

Emergency rooms are built to rule out the things that kill you: fractures, internal bleeding, head trauma. They do that job extremely well, and being cleared is genuinely good news.

What an ER is not built to do is identify the soft-tissue and spinal injuries that develop over the days that follow. Being cleared at the ER is not the same as being uninjured, and it does not stop the 14-day clock.

What to do after the crash

•       Call 911 and get a police report, even if the impact seemed minor.

•       Photograph the vehicles and the scene.

•       Exchange insurance information with the other driver.

•       Get a medical evaluation inside the 14-day window — don’t wait to see whether it resolves on its own.

•       Keep every document: the police report, your medical paperwork, and your insurance claim number.

We handle the insurance side

The paperwork is one of the most stressful parts of the whole experience, and it arrives exactly when you have the least energy for it. We bill your PIP insurer directly. PIP covers your evaluation, and we handle the billing.

County Line Chiropractic has focused exclusively on auto accident and PIP injury care since 1986, with six locations across Miami-Dade and Broward.

Care in English and Spanish. Dr. Vivian Solivan, D.C. and our team see patients in Spanish — you can describe what hurts in your own language, without an interpreter in the middle.

With or without a lawyer. Many patients come to us before they ever speak with an attorney. You are welcome to begin care first — the choice is always yours.

Full digital X-ray at all six locations. MRI and CT are handled through trusted accredited local imaging centers.
