Uber & Lyft Car Accident

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have completely revolutionized the transportation industry. Their convenience and popularity cannot be overlooked. In some cities, they can be even cheaper and more convenient than traditional taxis. But, what happens when you are injured in a car accident while riding in an Uber or Lyft vehicle? Read further for information regarding rideshare accidents and why you should see a South Florida chiropractor to address your injuries afterward.

What To Do If You Are Injured In A Rideshare Accident

When you call an Uber, the last thing you want to worry about is getting in an accident. Unfortunately, accidents often happen for reasons we can’t control. Whether you are a frequent or an occasional passenger with rideshare services, it is important to know what steps you should take if you are injured in an accident while riding in an Uber or Lyft. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Get Medical Treatment – Call 911 if necessary. Regardless of the severity of your injuries, it is always a good idea to get checked out by a professional chiropractor after being involved in an auto accident. Even if you feel ok, many injuries can take a few days to show symptoms. An experienced car accident chiropractor can help you heal as quickly as possible without medications and invasive surgeries.
  2. Call The Police – No matter who was at fault for the accident, always get a police report made and remember to request a copy.
  3. Take Photos – Document the damage to the vehicles involved by taking as many photos as possible.
  4. Collect Information – Obtain the insurance information from the drivers of the vehicles involved, as well as, the names and contact information from anyone who witnessed the accident.
  5. Inform the Rideshare Company – Go back to the rideshare app and report the accident to the rideshare company, so that they can record the incident.
  6. Report a serious accident involving a driver or vehicle while riding in an Uber
  7. Report an accident, safety incident, or citation while riding in a Lyft

Uber & Lyft Insurance Policies in South Florida

Unknown to many, there are legally mandated insurance policies in place that provide benefits to Uber and Lyft drivers and their passengers when they are involved in an accident that occurs when the rideshare service is being provided. These insurance policies also provide coverage to third parties who may have been involved in an accident involving an Uber or Lyft driver.

The insurance policies that Uber and Lyft have put in place provide different levels of insurance coverage, depending on how the driver was engaged with their rideshare app at the time of the accident. These coverages are as follows:

  1. When the rideshare driver is not online and engaged on the rideshare app. In these cases, there no coverage provided by the rideshare company. The only insurance that will be available to you is the driver’s own personal auto insurance policy and/or your own insurance coverage.
  2. When the driver is online and engaged in the app, but does not have a passenger. Here the rideshare company covers the driver with $25,000 in property damage coverage and $50,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, up to a maximum of $100,000 per accident. But, this will only kick in if and when the driver’s insurance is insufficient to cover your claim.
  3. When the rideshare driver is transporting a passenger or en route to pick up a passenger for transport. If the accident occurs while the driver is on the way to pick up a passenger accepted through the rideshare app or when he or she is carrying that passenger, there is $1 million of liability insurance in place and another $1 million in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

What is the Rideshare Accident Policy for Drivers without Passengers in the Car?

Rideshare drivers are required to carry their own personal liability insurance. In addition, as long as the rideshare driver was online and engaged in the rideshare app, meaning that they were either 1) online waiting for a request, 2) en route to pick up a passenger, or 3) transporting a passenger booked from the app, he or she will be covered under the rideshare company’s liability insurance policy. If not, then you will have to rely on the rideshare driver’s personal auto insurance policy.

This is important to know because, often, a driver who is responsible for causing an accident has the very minimum amount of liability insurance required by law. This means that no matter how serious your injuries and losses are, there will be little or no money to be recovered in a lawsuit. However, when an accident involves an Uber or Lyft driver, for example, an injured person can potentially recover up to a million dollars or more.

Why You Should Seek Chiropractic Care for Injuries From an Uber or Lyft Accident

uber lyft rideshare accident injury insuranceInjuries sustained in car accidents often include soft tissue injuries, or in other words, damage to the muscles and ligaments that support your spine. The soft tissues are the most crucial tissues in the body. In fact, soft tissue injuries are one of the most common causes of chronic pain and disability after a car accident and can really cause an injury victim severe long-term pain and financial burden in the future if not addressed immediately. The trouble with treating soft tissue injuries, however, is that they do not immediately show up in emergency room exams or in CAT scan results. At County Line Chiropractic, we have the latest technology to pinpoint any potential underlying damage before it gets worse.

Although digital X-ray scans are extremely useful in revealing broken bones, concussions, internal bleeding, and other injuries, most soft tissue injuries routinely go undetected. In fact, soft tissue damage is often overlooked during CT scans in the emergency room. Alternatively, we recommend MRIs to generate detailed images of the inside of the body, which helps us to clearly identify soft tissue damage to immediately spot issues, pinpoint the origin, and help your body recover properly and medication-free.

Fortunately, chiropractors are trained to locate and treat soft tissue injuries. Our professional chiropractors have 30+ years of combined experience diagnosing accident injuries, such as:
