Hurricane South Florida Car Accidents
July 07, 2020

Hurricane season always poses a challenge for drivers as it brings tropical weather and extreme driving conditions. Knowing how to drive in inclement weather as well as when to stay home and avoid driving can keep you safe during any storm, even hurricanes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), accidents in inclement weather cause more than 450,000 injuries and more than 6,000 fatalities annually. You might expect high winds to be behind most hurricane related car accidents and deaths. With that in mind, the team at County Line Chiropractic Medical & Rehab Centers would like to offer these tips to keep you safe during hurricane season. And if you are involved in a car accident during this year’s hurricane season, please contact us! Remember injury begins at impact!

Safety Tips for Keeping Drivers Safe During Hurricane Season

Hurricane Driving Safety Tips

  • Always exercise caution when driving in rain and high winds. If you and your passengers don’t need to be out and about, stay home, and stay safe. If you must be out, slow down and stay alert. Fallen trees and branches, downed power lines, stalled vehicles, and debris and other hazards could be on the roadway because of the storm.
  • Keep your vehicle properly maintained all the time, that way it’s always prepared for inclement weather. Headlights, windshield wipers, brakes, and tires should be checked regularly and kept in proper working order.
  • Never try to drive through flooded areas. Never go around high-water barricades to reach your destination faster. According to FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) it only takes six inches of flooding to cause you to lose control or your car to stall.

If You Are in an Accident During Inclement Weather

Hurricane Car Accidents - Chiropractic Care

If you are involved in an accident during inclement weather:

  • Call the authorities or emergency responders. Do not leave the scene and make sure to see that anyone needing emergency care gets the proper treatment.
  • Document the scene with notes and photos (weather conditions, road conditions, damages, etc.) and collect the relevant information from everyone involved, including witnesses.
  • After the police arrive and everyone is safe, seek medical attention. Contact County Line Chiropractic and we will help you with the entire process.

Medical Care Following a Hurricane-related Accident

Even if you don’t need immediate emergency care at the scene, it is best to seek a medical evaluation after any accident. Many times, after a vehicle crash, you may not feel any injuries immediately but they can appear days later. A medical professional, like a chiropractor, can uncover injuries which may not have manifested on the scene, and recommend a treatment plan for you to ensure your future health and wellness.

Chiropractors specialize in injuries common to auto accidents like whiplash, herniated disc injuries, neck pain, and other musculoskeletal problems. Having information related to injuries is also beneficial when communicating with insurance carries as well as attorneys.
