Unless you have back pain, you probably don’t think much about your spine. But the muscles, ligaments, and bones of your back work hard for you each day. They allow you to twist and turn. They support you so that you can walk, run, and do other weight-bearing activities. And they protect your spinal cord, allowing your brain and body to communicate.

Even minor injuries to your back can wreak havoc on your daily life. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to help your back feel better and keep your spine in shape.

For starters, exercise is good medicine. Prolonged rest is not a good idea and can be harmful. One to 2 days of taking it easy is OK, but after that, it’s best to get moving. Being active can help you mend if you’re already hurting. And it can help keep future injuries at bay. Swimming and walking are good choices for people with mild to moderate back pain.

You may have to ease up on your exercise program a bit when your back is acting up, but this shouldn’t last long. If you’re not sure about being active, ask your chiropractic doctor about exercises you can do.

Your foot health also affects your back and spine. Supportive shoes with a low heel are best to avoid back problems. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes if you suffer from back pain.

Most back pain symptoms resolve within a short period of time. Chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, moist heat, or ice packs can help with discomfort and may speed recovery. Ask your chiropractor if there are any tests, referrals, or treatments that might be helpful to use along with your current treatment plan. Keep moving as much as you can, and call your chiropractic doctor if you have numbness or muscle weakness or if your pain lingers or is severe.
