New research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows that most of the increased risk is due to the circumstances of women’s crashes and the types of vehicles they tend to drive rather than physical differences.
Data from the federal Fatality Analysis Reporting System showed that men are more likely to be driving the striking vehicle in two-vehicle front-to-rear and front-to-side crashes. Since the driver of the striking vehicle is at a lower risk of serious injuries than people in the stricken vehicle, that could account for some of the reasons women are 37-73% more likely than men to be seriously injured in auto accidents.
Additionally, 70% of women crashed in cars compared with 60% of men, while more than 20% of men crashed in pickups compared to less than 5% of women. Larger vehicles such as trucks, SUVs, and minivans offer more protection in a crash compared to cars.
