New crash tests performed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and Humanetics showed that slightly higher speeds were enough to increase the driver’s risk of severe injury or death. They crashed three 2010 Honda CR-V EX crossovers – one at 40 mph, one at 50 mph, and one at 56 mph.
There was minimal intrusion into the driver’s space at 40 mph, meaning injuries would likely not be severe. However, at 50 mph, there was noticeable deformation on the driver’s side of the vehicle, and at 56 mph, the interior of the vehicle was significantly compromised, with crash test dummies registering severe neck injuries and likely lower leg fractures.
