The year 2020 has been challenging for everyone and while 2021 holds the promise of a better year, many difficulties remain. For those living or vacationing in Florida, highway safety is a major concern. How you may ask?

Unfortunately, Florida ranks among the worst states in the country for highway safety. Some claim the cause is older drivers or cast blame on drivers vacationing in the state, while others blame the ranking on the fact that Florida has fewer highway safety laws compared to other states. Whatever the reason behind Florida’s ranking, here are some tips to avoid an accident while driving in Florida:

Who Does The Highway Safety Ranking?

Florida Ranks Among the Worst States for Highway Safety: How to Avoid a Car Accident

The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety issue an annual report grading all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. The report, known as The Advocates’ Report, has been issued annually for nearly 20 years and focuses on five categories including:

  • Child Passenger Safety
  • Occupant Protection
  • Distracted Driving
  • Teen Driving
  • Impaired Driving

Grades include Good (green), Caution (yellow), and Danger (red); a nod to the colors of the well-known traffic light. Florida ranks red with nearly 3,000 fatal crashes and more than 3,000 traffic-related deaths. Florida is among 12 U.S. states that earned the lowest distinction for highway safety.

Improving Florida’s Highway Safety Ranking

The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety have recommended that Florida enact additional safety laws in order to join the ranks of the safer, green states. Some of the recommendations include:

  • Adding rear primary enforcement seat belt laws
  • An all-rider motorcycle helmet law
  • Additional car seat safety laws
  • Increased minimum age for learners and restricted licensing for teen drivers
  • All-driver text messaging restrictions
  • Other measures

The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety feel increased laws regarding safety belt usage and greater allowances for law enforcement to address texting and driving without an additional infraction could help.

Highway Safety Tips for Florida Residents and Visitors

With car accidents as the leading cause of death among individuals under the age of 54, the truth is many car accident deaths can be prevented. Always buckling up and always driving sober are a great start in keeping you and your loved ones safe. Always avoid distracted driving, which means no emails, texts, messaging, or checking social media while driving.

Before you head out, no matter the length of the journey, check the weather and be prepared as downpours, storms, and other inclement weather are common in South Florida. Have child safety seats safely and properly installed and secured for your littlest passengers and ensure children under the age of 12 are in the back seat in a child safety seat or buckled in with a seatbelt.
