Every injury is different but there are definitely some most common causes of workplace injuries that occur repeatedly. How often do injuries in the workplace actually happen? The National Safety Council records 4.6 million or more workplace injuries per year, a rate that equates to an injured worker nearly every seven seconds. Let’s explore the most common causes of workplace injuries, how to avoid them, and what to do if you have been injured on the job.

Overexertion Injuries

Overexertion Injuries are among the most common, resulting from lifting, pulling, pushing, holding, turning, throwing, carrying, and catching beyond one’s ability to do so. These injuries often present as sprains (stretching or tearing a ligament) or strains (stretching or tearing a muscle or tendon).

Same Level Falls/Falls to a Lower Level

Injuries from same-level falls are impact injuries that occur when climbing steps or stairs, falling on an uneven surface or due to an object, or falling by tripping over one’s self. An injury from falls to a lower level can occur when a worker falls through a surface or falls from a ladder, equipment, or collapsing structure.

Being Struck by Workplace Equipment/Object

Workplace injuries of this kind include being struck by a vehicle, equipment, or rolling object. It also includes being struck by a falling object/equipment, a flying or ejected object. Additionally, the injuries resulting from failing handheld equipment, an object breaking while being handled, or a swinging/slipping object.

Exertions, Reactions, or Repetitive Motion Injuries

Similar to overexertion injuries, injuries due to exertion or reactions occur while crawling, bending, twisting, reaching, climbing, kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, and boarding, etc. Repetitive motion injuries result from recurring use of tools or equipment, that is grasping, placing, or moving materials or typing, data entry, mouse use, or texting.

Slip or Trip Injuries

While falls are commonly a part of slip or trip injuries, this is not always the case. Injuries can occur when slipping on a slick surface or substance or tripping on an uneven surface without falling.

While these are common causes of workplace injuries, they do not represent all injuries that occur in the workplace. These examples and other injuries may occur as a result of employee error or hazardous workplace conditions. Even so, there are a number of ways employees can avoid injury and protect themselves including wearing proper protective equipment, avoiding twisting and bending while lifting, reporting hazards like equipment problems or wear, using proper posture at a desk along with proper computer placement, and staying alert and aware of what occurring nearby.
